The Occupy Toronto movement (and it’s sister movements around the world) is important but you wouldn’t know it if all you did was watch what’s happening on the streets in Toronto, New York or elsewhere. You’d think it was just a bunch of upset people looking to pick a fight. Which might very well be true. But go to Occupy Toronto’s website and you’ll find it actually has a very unified message. They are supporting the Robin Hood Tax. I had no idea that this was so prominent in their campaign in Toronto. Which is great since the Robin Hood Tax is a very smart, simple and effective idea that’s really hard to oppose.
But they need to get this message out. They need to get a lot of robin hood masks on the street. They need to brand the movement desperately. They are losing the opportunity to unite under a single meaningful message that can withstand the scrutiny of the politicians, can be consumed quickly by the media and has the simplicity required to attract massive tidal waves of public support. Who wouldn’t support Robin Hood?
So if you are participating in the Occupy Toronto movement, you’ve got the right intentions but the execution is all wrong. Please change tactics and I think you’ll get a much different result I expect.

I'm a professional engineer working in the software industry based currently out of Toronto, Canada. If I'm not writing code, you might find me on the hockey rink or reading the NY Times over coffee.
I have recently started to plan a trip around the world with my wife, Susana, putting my software development career on hold while I grow and learn in other ways beyond the keyboard.
